Thanks a lot, I like to know more about “Tit for Tat”. I think I should start learning game theory, It seems to be very insightful, with many applications from social sciences to engineering.

However, note that in all of these studies, the situation is a very, very simplified abstraction of the real-world. They illuminate only something, not the real story.

In his simplified repeated game studies, Robert Axelrod discovered that Tit-for-Tat strategy was the best.

The way to get out of the dilemma you suggested in the experiement you cite is to willfully reduce pain and wait for a response by the other side. The best strategy for both would be to reduce pain. They will discover this to be the best “repeated-game” strategy if they play this repeated game often enough.

A very nice and interesting point of view. It reminds me a sentence in “Fihe-Ma-Fih” where Mowlana says:
“A feather of angel is tied to a donkeys tail”. But where is the “That”?

Ya know what it reminds me of? It reminds me of how the angels all freaked out when God told them he was creating Man (probably in some divine equivalent of orientation meeting, rofl) THIS is what they saw, and it very much looked like a clever beast and it freaked them out very much as the concept of “thinking machine” freaks us out (think of all those Evil Robot sci-fis!) But still, God knew That Which They Did Not Know…

I guess we all more or less find ourselves on the angels’ side. WE sure cannot see “That” either. However, we are in the difficult situation of feeling we OUGHT TO know what “That” is. We do not have the easy luxury of “Yes Lord, let your will prevail. We’ll obey you no matter what *smile* *bow*” that the angels had (although poor cousin Devil might argue that it was NOT all that easy lol!)

I’ve actually meant to blog this for so long but haven’t cuz I would have to explain the whole Islamic story of Genesis to get here and I’ve never quite felt like typing that much. lol!

رضا جان من سعی کردم آن چهل درصد را تصور کنم، شبیه این است که شدت ضربه ای که شخص می زند دو برابر ضربه قبلی اش است. اما درمورد انقراض فکر کنم میمونها، گرگها، و گوزنها هم در همین مایه ها هم دیگر و دیگر حیوانات را میزنند! اما اگر انسان منقرضشان نکند خیال انقراض ندارند! ضمناً باید در نظر داشت توانایی هر طرف محدود است و تا مقدار محدودی این رشد میتواند ادامه پیدا کند. گرچه وضعیت آدم چندان به آنها شباهت ندارد به قول قدیمیها از این بشر دوپا هیچ چیز بعید نیست.

گذشته از اینها همان طور که گفتی کاش روی نتیجه این تحقیق واقعا فکر کنیم.
